About Dr Zhang

Dr Xiang Yun Zhang is one of the few practitioners in the UK qualified in both Western medicine and acupuncture / Traditional Chinese Medicine — a dual training that shapes everything about how she cares for her patients.

Training and career

Dr Zhang obtained her first degree in medicine — covering both Western medicine and acupuncture/TCM — in China in 1985. She was awarded an MD in Human Reproductive Medicine in 1991, followed by a PhD in Gynaecological Oncology from Beijing Medical University in 1996.

While practising as a gynaecologist in China she successfully integrated acupuncture and Chinese medicine into her clinical work. After moving to the UK, she spent seven years in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George’s Hospital, London. Working in the NHS, she often felt her acupuncture and TCM skills were exactly what some patients needed — so in 2003 she returned to Chinese medicine practice, first in Harley Street and later in Clapham and Wallington.

Special interests

Dr Zhang’s speciality is general gynaecology and obstetrics, with a major interest in fertility and IVF support, pregnancy care — including morning sickness and breech presentation — post-natal care, menopause, and irregular or painful periods. She has published research in both Western medical journals and Chinese medicine journals; see her articles and publications.
